TO SEE HIS DYING WIFE.
A MAN BRAVES GAOL- . THE MEANS AND THE EXT). "This man had a sick wife -who was dying in Auckland, and he was in Aratapu without money, consequently he was driven to this act in order to get away to see hi? wife, who has eince died.' , .Such was the pitiful tragedy told in a sentence by chief detective MeMahon when a roan of thirty-five years admitted a charge in the Police Court this morning that at Aratapu on February 18. he obtained £3 0/G from Michael MeGreal by means of a valueless cheque. '"The man was in dire mental stress," continued the detective. "He was without money when he got word that h.13 wife was dying at Auckland, and lie, to raise the money necessary to get to* Auckland he tendered the cheque to the landlord of the place where he was staying 'and go it cashed. It was subsequently found that the cheque wae valueless, but before the "issue of the warrant for his arrest became known to him he sent £1 to Mr. McGreal and at the came time notified him that he would make good the rest of the money a* soon . as he could. There is nothing previous in the nature of a police offence-against him, and his character i* good, while he states that he will be able to pay the remaining 40/6 to-morrow." "Even a good end cannot justify a wrong act." commented Mr. E. C. Citton, S.M.. "But I suppose.the man has been sufficiently punished by being brought here. He will be convicted,-and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, under the condition that ho settles up the repayment of the money as stated."
