BEACH THEFTS.
POSITION AT SHELLY BEACH.
"There have been a large number of tliefte from Shelly Beach 'before mc, and it would be wise for the authorities to instruct their attendants to keep a sharp oversight of the property of bathers," remarked Mr. Frazer, S.M., this morning, when a boy of thirteen came before him and admitted having taken half-a-crown and a pocket-knife from the clothes of a bather when the latter was in the water. His Worship convicted the boy, who had an otherwise good and unblemished character, and put him on probation for six months.
Relative to the matter of oversight at the bathing sheds at the beach, and the magistrate's remarks, a police officer informed a "Star" reporter that the property of bathers was not particularly well looked after by the attendants. The thieving in past years had been widespread and undetected, and it was, he said, owing largely to the efforts of the present attendant that offenders were being so frequently detected this season and brought to book. The delinquents were beginning to find, the officer said, that the supervision of the beach now made it dangerous for them to continue their practice -of tampering with the clothes and cash of bathers.
