RIMUTAKA DEVIATION.

MASTERTON, Friday.
A meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce to-day had before it correspondence that- had passed 'between the president and 'Minister for -Pubic Works, in wihich the former .had urged that the opinion of .the engineer should "be taken concerning the deviation of the Rimutaka railway before a start was made with the construction of -the Feathers-ton-Martin-borough railway. Considerable discussion took place on the subject. The president maintained tha:t the engineers ' had reported 6trongly in favour of a deviation from Woodside, and he urged that this should be the starting point of 'the Martinborough railway. The action of tbe president in communicating with the Minister wafi confirmed, and a sub-conrmttee was appointed to confer with the Lower Valley settlers with ;i. view to presenting a monster petition to tlie Minister on the subject. The Chamber further decided to ask the general manager for railways to connect the Wairarapa mail train with tlie Main Trunk railway.
