ALLUREMENTS OF OVERSEAS.
DEFICIENCY OF FARM HANDS.
LONDON, December 19.
The report states that since 1901 about 1.060.000 apres have passed out of tillage. Over 308,000 acres of this total went out of cultivation because of emigration to Canada and Australia, due to the activity of agents, and the extensive advertising.
The allurements of colonial life, and tbe low wages in the rural districts, were amongst the chief causes, but there is no direct evidence that emigration has been greatest where wages are least.
The report adds that there is a general deficiency of skilled farm hands. Any sharpening of intelligence due to improved literary education does not compensate for the lack of technical training.
Moreover, many areas now under agriculture are being neglected by those who still seek employment on the land.
