ESPIONAGE CHARGE
WITHDRAWN BY THE STATE. AN OFFICIAL PROMISE. (Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 18. The prosecution of Karl Hentsehel (the German navigation teacher), on a charge of espionage, has been withdrawn, because it would be contrary to the State's interests to proceed. It is further stated that prior to his confession an official entrusted with espionage matters paid Hentsehel for information implicating himself and Parrott.
Hentsehel wrongly understood that he had been promised protection if he confessed.
The prosecution reserves the right to prosecute if the confession be publicly repeated.
