CHINESE HOUSES RAIDED. FIFTEEN PERSONS ARRESTED. ißy Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The police paid a surprise visit to premises in Taranaki and Haining Streets, occupied by Chinese, at a late hour to-night. The raid waa organised with the object of uprooting supposed pakapoo dens. Five Chinese and ten white men were arrested. A good deal of excitement prevailed for tt time amongst the cosmopolitan inhabitants of the neighbourhood when the news spread that the officers had invaded the quiet haunts usually sacred to Celestials and their special friends. WELLINGTON, this tijy. Fifteen persons arrested iv the raid ou Chinese premises last night were before the Court to-day. The five Chinese pleaded not guilty. and were remanded on bail of £ 100 in the case of two principals, and £o in the others. Ten Europeans pleaded guilty to a charge of being found on the premises, and were remanded till Monday for sentence on bail of £J in each case.
