" SWEATING " IN MELBOURNE MELBOURNE, July 29. During the trial of two maternity nurses. Hannah Janet Hurrell and Clarice Donaldson, together with Dr. George Leger Erson. for conspiring to defraud the Commonwealth by fictitious claims under the Maternity Allowance Act, counsel made comment? about the adoption by the police of some of the notorious American "third degree" methods. Dr. Erson maintained that he was plainly told by a detective the bc~t thing he could do was to make a confession. It was admitted that persons had been detained at the detective oflice for bour3 without a chaTge having been laid against them, and had been persistently raked with questions and cross-questions in order to get from them statements in accord with the purpose of the police..
