MEETINGS.
VTAITT3MATA CHORAL SOCIETY. A meeting of the residents of Birkenhead and ihc surrounding districts wae held last night in the Foresters" Hall Birkeaaeacl, ior mc purpose of forming n Choral society. There was a large attendance, it was decided to inaugurate a society to be called "The Waitemata Choral Society." lhe following officers were elected:—Patron Mr. H. Brett; vice-presidents, Messrs AY Wallace (Mayor of liirkenhead), A Ji'eyes H. Uaduegg, Geo. Fraser (Mayor of Nortiicote), C. E. Cotton, and If. 11.-Hunt- secretary, Mr. A. G. Osborne; treasurer Mrs Brown; auditor, Mr. A. L. White; coiiciuetor' Mr. W. Gray (late of the Carl Rosa Openi Company, London, and now a resident of Northcote); committee, Messrs. E (j Skeates. W. H. K. Stewart, H. Hall, Misses M. Unsworth. A. Clow, , and Mrs. Stewart. It was resolved to meet alternately at Northcote and Birkenhead for the rehearsals.
POXSOXBT LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
The first meeting of the season of the above Society was held last night in the Leys Institute, when the election of oificers for the ensuing season took place. Sir. X. W. Leys was again unanimously elected patron of the Society. Mr. W. Meiiath was elected president, and the following vice-presidents: Jlr. John Gittos, Sir. Docwra, and Miss Stubbs; Mr. C. S. Lees was elected as hou. secretary and treasurer. Mr. U. N. Bagnall and Mies Bennett editor uud sub-editor respectively, Mr. A. A. Veale reporter, aiid Mr. L. Phillips auditor. The following were elected as members of tno committee: Miss Stubus, Miss Bennett. Messrs. Bowdeu and Smith. The secretary was asked to notify all members that a vole Would be tiikeu next Monday night as to the desirability of holding the meetings of the Society rortnightly instead of weekly, as at present. An unusually good syllabus was formulated, and a large number of new members were proposed and accepted.
REMUERA RATEPAYERS.
The statutory annual meeting of ratepayers of the Remnera Road district was held last evening in St. Aidans' Hall. Mr J. S. Dlctson, chairman of the Road Board, presided, and there was an atteudance of about.sixty ratepayers. All the Board members were present, with the exception of Messrs E. Boud and <\ H. Furuess. the latter of whom forwarded an apology. Tile statement of accounts showed that £is;'A ■had been collected in fates for the year 1012-13, and f307 for previous years. Expenditure under the heading of general account totalled £S7lO, leaving a debit balnuee on March 31 of £2322. On the motion of the chairman the balauee-shei't was adopted, subject to the Government audit. In the course of sotnd* discussion the chairman remarked that, all things considered, the balance-sheet was a very satisfactory one. He pointed out that though the general account showed a deficit, the outstanding rates reached such a large total that the deficiency was practically covered He referred to the recent addition' of four members to"the Board, a change which. lad enabled the large volume of business to be handled much more readily. A lengthy xMseussion (reported elsewJiere) was subsecjuently held on the Greater Auckland proposals. _^
