DISCOVERY OF THE PACIFIC.

THE 4OOTH ANNIVERSARY. (Received 5.55 a.m.) LONDON, April 2D. The Royal Geographical Society is arranging for the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific by Vasco Balboa.

Vasco Nunez Balboa, a Spanish soldier, went to America in 1500. and 12 years later was made Governor of Santo Domingo. From the Indians he learned that there was a great sea to the south, and far southward a country rich in gold (Peru). Determined to discover these he set out from Darien on September 1, 1513, and after an adventurous journey reached on September 25 a mountain from which he first say the Pacific. The shore itself was attained on September 29. Balboa, entering the water, took possession for the Kings of Castile. In the next year he returned to Darien, and from the Governor, with whom his relations were not friendly, obtained permission to explore the nevrly-discovered ocean. He cut the timbers for his ships on the Caribbean side and transported them with great labour across the isthmus. He had. launched his two vessels when he was arrested on a charge of contemplated revolt, and beheaded.
