CABLE RATES.

BIG REDUCTIONS WANTED. MELBOURNE, this day. Before the Empire Commission, Mr Oxenham (secretary of the Postal Department) gave evidence in favour of a State-owned Atlantic cable, so that the Pacific Cable Board would have full control of the traffic between the United Kingdom and Australia, and be in a position to provide the cheapest, speediest, and most efficient service possible under the circumstances. He suggested that ordinary cable rates should be reduced to 2/ a word and Press rates to 6d a word, deferred to 1/, and the week-end cables to 6d a word. He considered the present scanty Press cables would be considerably increased if rates were reduced.
