HALF-HOLIDAY POLL.
Considerable interest is being evinced in connection with the poll to be taken to-morrow for the purpose of ascertaining the feeling of citizens as to whether the present system of" an optional half-holi-day (on Wednesday or Saturday) shall continue, or wrhether a Saturday halfholiday shall be uniformly observed. The privilege of voting on this question is open to all who exercise their franchise in connection with the city and suburban elections. All boroughs are concerned in the poll with tho exception of Onehunga and Devonport, which are at a greater distance from the city than the Shops and Offices Act provides for. Northcote and Birkenhead will form part of a combined district with Auckland and surrounding boroughs, and the result will apply to the whole area in which voting takes place. The. ballot paper will set forth each day from Monday to Saturday, and the elector may place a cross against any one of the days which he favours for the observance of the regular half-holi-day. It is worth remembering, however, that if Saturday is the day approved at the poll, it will be compulsory for shopkeepers to observe that day; while if Wednesday or any other day is chosen, then Saturday closing is optional. The half-holiday poll is being taken in the < city of Auckland and the boroughs of Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Newmarket, Grey Lynn, Birkenhead, and Northcote, in connection with other ballots.
