H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND.
RACE MEETING PROPOSED.
FOR WARSHIP WEEK.
In view of the great success tiiat attended the race meeting at Elterslie promoted in honour of the visit of the American fleet, a suggestion has been made that a similar function be arranged on the occaeion of the visit of ithe New Zealand. Ellerelie admirably lends itself to the entertainment of a large number of people without any inconvenience, the spaciaue grounds giving every facility to the purpose, and the gathering held at the thne of the Americana' visit was probably the most enjoyable of the many pntir.gs held. The season of the year is also all in favour of the proposal, for it is the beginning of the jumping season, and to sportsmen no finer sight can be witnessed anywhere than a race over the Elkrslie steeplechase course, which is easily the most pieturceque in Australasia. Special permission would need to be obtained from tbe Government for the holding of the meeting, but as the Minister of Internal Affairs, tiie Hon. H. D. Bell, is at present on a visit to the North, 'hie views on the subject could easily be obtained and the question fully discussed. ! One strong argument in favour of the (gathering :"e that it would be' more than self-supporting—in fact, with anything like decent weather, the profits "would probably provide funds for the whole of the entertaining in connection with, the visit. -
