NEW POST OFFICE.
IN WUXEStEY STREET. TO HOUSE AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE SYSTEM. The erection of the long-promised post office in Wellesley Street has been delayed so often that a largely-signed petition from business men in that vicinity was recently dispatched to the Post-master-General, urging that something should at once be done by the Department. The following reply has been received by Mr. Garliek, who headed the petition:—"ln reference to your letter of the 22nd ult., forwarding a petition for the early erection of a post office building in Wellesley Street, I have the honour by direction to Inform you that the preparation of plans is deferred until it is ascertained what accommodation will be required in the building for telephone purposes. The apparatus for the Auckland automatic telephone system is to be installed in the building, and it will not be known what accommodation will be needed for the purpose until it has been decided what system is to be adopted. Tenders for the automatic equipment close on May 1 next.—l have the honour to be, etc —(Signed) Geo. B. Wall, Assistant-Secretary."
