RESENTMENT IN AUSTRALIA
I OVER PORTSMOUTH CEREMONY WHO WAS THE FIRST ? (Received 1.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. official quarters at so mu ch comment having arisen ov« the inspection of infh it w v^ ,and ' and the references in tnc hnghsh Press to this being the first start by the overseas Dominions to build tbear own fleet units. H is questioned here whether the decision of New Zealand to build a battleship was really the first step in that direction in Australasia It is suggested, rather, that Australia should be given credit for having led the colonies in that Imperial movement. It is remarked among defence authorities that H.M.A.S. Melbourne left Britain only the other day fully manned with an Australian crew with no such demonstration over her departure as was made in connection with tne inspection of the New Zealand, nor was there a similar celebration when either of the Australian destroyers left England. The inference drawn there is that the officials of Australia are not so well learned in the art of advertising as are those of the sister colony.
