LATE TELEGRAMS.

A DETERRENT TO CRIME. | WELLINTON, this day. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day before llr. Justice Chapman. In his charge to the Grand Jury the Judge said the list of cases was not large, and none presented any complications. In comparison with a few years back the criminal list showed a diminution in the number of cases, which was partially due to the operation of the lawa respecting habitual criminals and reformative treatment, which had convinced a number of persons that a criminal career was not a profitable business. He did not think New Zealand received so many criminals from Australia as formerly.

WELLINGTON - , this day. The catalogue for Friday's wool sale contains 16,080 bales, compared with. 13,729 at the corresponding sale last year.
