WOMEN'S FRANCHISE.
FAVOURED BY LORD HALDANE. FURTHER "WINDOW SMASHING. (Received 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, November 0. A demonstration by the National Union of Suffragette Societies was held in the Albert Hall last night. A letter was read from Lord Haldane (Lord High Chancellor), in which lie expressed the conviction that nothing could keep back the cause of suffrage. Recent events, he said, were irrelevant to the merits of the controversy. He hoped that the House of Commons would not lie misled by the folly of a few fanatics. Sir Edward Grey (Minister for Foreign -Affairs) telegraphed his sympathies with the object of the meeting. As a protest against the rejection by She House of Commons of Mr P. Snowten's amendment to the Home Rule Bill, providing for votes for women in Ireland, the suffragettes indulged in windowsmashing riots last night. The windows of the National Insurance Commissioner's Office and several windows in Oxford and Bond Streets were broken. Several arrests were made. Mr Hopwood (the magistrate) imposed fines in the cases of some of the Oxford and Bond Street window-smashers, in default a fortnight's imprisonment. Uthers were remanded owing to the seriousness of the damage they had done. ARIZONA ADOPTS SUFFRAGE > (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 6. Arizona has adopted women's suffrage.
