A POPULAR TEACHER.

MR J. L. SCOTT HONOURED. A large representative gathering of the •esidents of Parnell gathered in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday jvcning to take farewell of Mr J. L. I >cott, who is retiring after eighteen .'ears' public service as , headmaster in he Tarnell Public School. Mr R. S. 3riggs, the Mayor, occupied the chair, mil lie presented Mr Scott with a service )f silver plate, handsomely chased, which lad been subscribed for by parents and •esidents of Parnell to show their recognition of a teacher who had always jcen at his post and had ever done his luty with life-long advantage to children vho had been fortunate enough to come mdcr his guidance. Beyond equipping he children in their best interests for heir course in life, the headmaster had ilways gained and retained the respect if his pupils and that of the parents, fhe gift, which had been spontaneously nibscribed by the residents in token of :he work so well done by the retiring teacher, was appropriately inscribed. Uessr.s W. F. Binos (present chairman of he School Committee), and \V. Thomas (ex-chairman) /added appreciations of Mr Scott's character and of the work hr had done in fitting his charges for the iuties of citizenship in such a manner the whole morale of the school had Deen raised to a high standard. After the Mayor had publicly welcomed Mr Alfred Taylor, who is taking up the lieadmastership in succession to Mr 'cott, the latter replied, stating his gratification at the kindly appreciation of his services by the residents, and thanking parents, staff and committee for the support given him during his eighteen years of service in the school. He reminded parents and children of the exceptional advantages they enjoyed under the present education system, paid a tribute to the general high character which was a feature of the teachers of the Dominion, and concluded by putting in a request that the support accorded to him in the past should be extended to his successor. Mr Taylor briefly thanked parents and residents for the encouragement conveyed in their warm-hearted welcome.
