THE MOANATAIARI SUDE. MAIN CROSSCUT STOPPED. MIXES' INSPECTOR INTERVENES. In the interests of life and property, ■work has for the present been stopped in the main crosscut at I,UOOft that is being put in to test Thames deep levels. It will be remembered that a week ago the Moanatai&ri slide was reported to have been met with, then a subsequent message was received to the effect that it proved only 10ft in width. As there woe no big flow of water, old Thames hands expressed some doubt as to whether the Moanataiari slide had really been met with. The Inspector of Mines evidently decided that further precautions should be taken, and wrote to Mr. G. Warne (supervisor) as follows, on September sth:—"Owing to the main crosscut drive cutting into broken slidy country rock, which is believed to be the footwall of the Moanataiari main slide, or a branch of that slide, in the interests of life and property it is my duty to request that the main crosscut drive be driven no further until a borehole is put in in accordance with sections 40 and 41 of the Mining Act, 1908. This request must be regarded as urgent, and complied with.—(Signed) B. Bennie." Mr. Warne at once communicated with Mr. Sheath's office, requesting instructions as soon as possible. Mr. Hudson, chairman of the General Purposes Committee of the Board of Management of the Thames deep levels, ordered the following wire to be sent Mr. Warn*: —"Consult Advisory Committee and report quickly what action it recommends to comply with the inspector's demand re boring." Mr. Warne replied: "Advisory Committee agree stopping face at once, and suggest Government diamond drill be procured without delay." Pending securing the drill, Mr. Sheath late this afternoon telegraphed: "Stop work at once and procure the drill." Fortunately the drill at Waihi is not under engagement at present, and the Mines Department has reported that it may be hired by the Board on the usual terms and conditions. THAMES WARDEN'S COCRT.
