WHALING IN THE NORTH.
FACTORY STEAMER ARRIVES. • The New Zealand 'Whaling Company's trying-out steamer Rakiura arrived at Auckland from the northern whaling station at 11 a.m. to-day. This is the first occasion on- which the Rakiura has visited the port. Anchored in the stream off Queen. Street wharf, the steamer would pass for a coal tramp were it not that she carries such a large quantity of deck gear. The Rakiura has come to Auckland to ship 1,000 tons of coal for the fleet. She will probably sail about the end oi the week for the Keraiadec Islands. The Hawk and the Eagle are to sail from Russell for the group on Tuesday next,- and the hunt for whales in those regions will be commenced as soon as the Rakiura arrives. The month of August was a slack season for whales, bo that the results of the few cruises from Russell have not been very encouraging. Up to the present the number of whales secured totals 37. The little steamers Whangarei and Whangaroa set out on a cruise early yesterday morning, but had not returned when the Rakiura sailed for Auckland.
