HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS.
A TOTTB. or INSPECTION. THE WATERFRONT TRANSFORMED. This morning several members of the Auckland Harbour Board, accompanied by Mr \V. H. Hiuner (Harbour Board engine"!-) and 11. B. Burnett (secretary), made a tour of inspection of this various works and improvements which the Board lias in hand or in view about the waterfront and the harlwur.
-\ii inspection was first made of th-e Hob-on Street reclamation works, the completion of which will enable to bu undertaken the straightening of Nelson Street to the north and of Customs Street tc til" west.
Thence the party went on to P..-I'H.' silo in Customs Street, concerning wlmi'li the present intention ie to' carry mil certain excavation work, thereby making several sections available for leasing, and setting a good deal of filling free for reclamation work on the foreshore in that localit3\ In the vicinity of the Parker-Lamb holding and the lower end of Hardingc Street there are important improvements arranged for and under consideration. There is a proposition forward to so arrange an exchange of land with the City Council that the road will be carried along tlio eastern boundary of Victoria Park, giving Uiat popular recreation ground a frontage on that side, as well as making the Hoards property more suitable for subdivision. Mr Earner bubniittcil proposals regarding excavations ailing Hip r,outh side of Customs Street tilld on the east side, of Victoria Park, by which the. Board will gain more ground, and will obtain a good deal of filling, which will be very useful in connection with the Board's works. There are also plans under consideration for better subdivision near that portion of Hardingc Street, which finishes in ahnost a de:ul end leading by a steep slope down into Customs Street.
Then there was also the proposed new Fiinshsuve Struct to be inspected. This roadway will form the new northern boundary of Victoria, Park, which, taking in the present road along that boundary, will Ik- widened by soft. The Board will haw nine new alUitineuls on the reclaimed r.incl in that locality. Fanshawe, Street, by its new route, will cut through the present site of the l.eyland-O'Brien work.- , , on the northern side of Customs Street. The mill will be given a new site on the reclamation, and an l'anshawe Street will run on into Customs Street, the result, will 1 be a most desirable straightening of Cu->l.oms Street at that portion of it. Th" variation will result in the present ;;i.ul being taken into the Board , lections, and tin , straightened Tor.d being formed on the reclamation. It is expected that the whole thing will be a ■wonderful improvement, and, ;'S Mr Ilainer remarked this morning to the Board members when explaining it, "You won't know the place" On the. reclamation between Victoria Park and the foreshore, between .Julian's ■wall and the north wall, there, is already about 40 acres completed of the (>7 acres to be reclaimed, and already some of the land has been leased in allotments. Having completed their visit of inspection in the district referred to. the Board members .left by launch on a tour of the upriver works and proposals.
