A SCUTTLED STEAMER.
INSURANCES VOID. CONCEALED POLICIES. LONDON, July 11. The High Court has decided that the steamer British Standard, which was lost whilst on her maiden voyage to Brazil in 1910. was over-insured to the extent of £6000. and that the concealment of the fact rendered the policy void. The Court refused to accept the allegation that Captain Brand had negligently and prematurely abandoned the vessel. The Board of Inquiry, which inquired into the wreck of the British Standard in August 10. found that the inrush of water which caused the vessel to sink was due to human agency, and censured the raaster and chief engineer for gross negligence. There was some, evidence of collusion between the managing owner and master. The latter's certificate was suspended for eighteen months, and he was mulcted in ' lOOOgns towards the costs of the inquiry. The chief engineer's certificate was suspended for 12 months, and be was ordered to pay 50gns.
