Mr H. W. Harcourt (Fiji) arrived in Auckland by the Islnnd steamer Atua to-day. Captain T. L. Wood, of Tirnaru, arrived in Auckland to-day and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Leave of absence was granted Mr. J. M. Mennie by the City Council) last night to enable him to visit Australia. The Hon. W. T. Massey, rrlmo Minister, will pay a short visit to Auckland at the beginning of next week. The condition of the Hon. E. Mibc&alson. who has been indisposed owing to contracting a severe- chill, continues ta steadily improve. Mr. E. Anderson has written to the secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce stating that he will be pleased to areept his election as a member of the Council of that organisation. A Press Association telegram reports .the death at Christohurch of Mr G. F. Bullen, aged 80, who formerly owned extensive properties in Kaikoura district, and leased the whole of Hundalee country from the Government. The Commander-in-Chief of the Australasian Squadron will visit Auckland in his flagship, H.M.s. Drake, from 27th to 29th July. The visit is for the pur- J pose of seeing the proposed sites for naval establishments, and on account of the shortness of its duration, the Commander-in-Chiefs time will be so fully occupied that he will be unable to enter on any other engagements. The Commander-in-Chief will be visiting Auckland either in December or January next, and making a stay at this port. At a social gathering held in St. Albans schoolroom, Dominion Road, last night, Mr. Grove, who has been Brrpexintendent of the Sunday-school for the last seven and a-half years, was presented by the teachers and scholars with a silver inkstand, as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by all. The Rev. Wingfield, in making the presentation, referred to the thorough manner in which Mr. Grove had carried out the duties of superintendent, and the general regret of both teachers and scholars at his now leaving the school. He al3o announced that Mr. Grove had informed him. that he wished to present an allotment of land to the church. Mr. Grove replied in a few well-chosen words.
