CITY WORKS.

K_J___AKXSAJTCS_ _CH_M B. I FODE _EW DEPAETMENIS GB__3_3. " At to_ight'6 City Conncil meefiSg the special t»_n__ee, -which has far Bpme mtintiiß past been investigating the City j&gi_eer J s department, will present i_| report. The report will indicate that there is need of reorganisation. The City -ngineer (Mr- W. E. Bush) was j asked to submit his reco___i(_~ions on the directions in which he considered his department should be reorganised. On these suggestions the Special C__mitte, has made several _terations, and these the City Council will this evening be asked to adopt. It is proposed to divide the work into four natural drnsions, os follows: —(1) Maintenance, comprising the upkeep of all streets and sewers, and works connected therewith; (2) public health, comprising the house-scavenging and night-soil services; (3) parks and reserves, <x>_pris_g the care of all parks, reserves, domains, and open spaces, tree planting and landscape improvement, and (4) supply, comprising the provision of team labour, road metal, stores and supplies -of all kinds required -for- different departments. The City Engineer had recommended the cfea-tion" of a fifth department, to deal with const_re_on_ works, comprising all works done out of loans, but the special committee has made no recom.mehdation in this direction. -One of the most important propositions the committee has to make is <that __. Jas. Tyler, who watched the construction of .the.Graiton bridge on the City Council's behalf, should now take over the supervision _©f the streets' construction wwrk, and Mr. A. A. Wrigg, who has for 25 years occupied the position of assistant engineer, retires, after six months' leave of absence. Each of the four departments, it is proposed, should be subdivided into subdepartments, each under the charge of a respe-nsiHe executive head, receiving mii structions from, and reporting to, the City Engineer (Mr. Bush). i " ; =
