His Excellency the Governor is spending the day shooting in the St. Heller's district with Captain Waters. Lord Islington will preside at the animal meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association in the Town Hall to-morrow night, and on Thursday will open the Auckland Art Society's annual exhibition of pictures. Mr. W. R. Montgomery, Secretary for Customs, and Mr. M. P. Cameron, Customs hardware expert, are visiting Auckland. The Prime Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) has accepted tbe invitation of the - Poverty Bay Scottish Society to breakfast at Gisborne to-morrow morning. Mr. H. B. Cooper, for many years past associated with the Sun Fire Insurance Company in Auckland has been appointed secretary and surveyor to the Auckland Fire Underwriters' Association. His Excellency the Governor, who recently secured a lease of Mrs Walter Johnston's Highden residence, Awahuri, near Feilding. formally took possession on May 1. but will not enter into occupation till early in November. Mr. William Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, arrived in Auckland by the Main Trunk train again this morning on Conciliation Council business, after spending the week-end in Wellington, whither he was called owing to illness in his family. He is staying at the Grand Hotel. The Prime Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) and the Hon W. D. S. Maeßonald (Minister of Public Works) left Wellington this morning for Gisborne to attend a function on Wednesday organised by the people of that district in honour of their member, Sir James Carroll. It is 22 years since the Prime Minister was at Gieborne. The Hon. J. A. Millar, who had mii tended leaving by the steamer to-day i for Gisborne, has had to postpone his departure owing to an attack of ptomaine poisoning, from which 'he has been suffering for several days. He 'will pro- : bably proceed South on Friday. I Yesterday was the twenty-fifth anniversary of Archbishop Redwood's appointment as an archbishop. His Grace was ordained at Maynooth in 1865, appointed to the Bishopric of Wellington in 1874, and created an archbishop on May 13th. 1887. The silver jubilee will not" he celebrated this week, owing to the Archbishop's absence from ■Wellington: but fitting ceremonies will be conducted on Wednesday of next week. The interment of the remains of Mr. Ernest Colebrook Forbes, son of the late Colonel Forbes of the Imperial Army, • took pla-ee at Opotiki on Saturday last. It was intended that the interment . should take place at Auckland, but this was rendered impossible owing to the steamers being baT-bound. Mr. Forbes* ; death occurred somewhat suddenly and! . under sad circumstances. It may be re- [ membered that his little daughter was i accidentally killed by a shot from a pea- , rifle. He had been to Rotorua with Mrs. , Forbes for a rest after the loss of his danghter and had just returned home ' when he had a sudden heart seizure and ' succumbed Mt. Forbes was a very popu- '. lar man and had a host of friends, to whom his death came as a great shock.
