MEETINGS.

OTAinUHU ROAD BOARD. The Otah-nhu Road Board met on Thursday evening. Referring to the £3000 loan for repairing the South Road, the clerk (Mr A. Ross) reported that the retiring board had appointed an engineer to take levels ; and prepare plans. It was Imperative that the lies stock road should 'be constructed as soon as possible, and It was advisable to make another application to the Minister for Public Works for a grant to cover the cost of this much-needed work. The excavation work at the foot of tie water tower had been left in a very -untidy state, and required levelling oil. The tram-way ouffht to be removed, the rails sold, and a zig-zag path formed from Portage-road to the top erf the hill. The ground should be clewed of noxious weeds, and the sheds removed. If these things -wore done the land might be leased at a pood price. The clerk recommended favourable consideration of an offer by Mr V. C. IJppiatt, of a piece of land in Lake-street, five acres in extent, as a picnic ground, for the snm of £350, subject to the Board constructing about 10 chains of roadway. The acquisition of the land, he said, -would 'be a great saving to the ratepayers of the future, besides providing a valuable asset in land skirting the TaraaW Elver. Tie Board decided to visit 1 the various parts of the district, and conelder wiiirt works should be carried out. GOOD TEMPLARS' DEBATE. At the weekly session of the Ark of Bden Ijodge of Good Tempters on Friday evening a debate, "Is Compulsory Military Training Necessary?" was held. Bro. Ingram took the affirmative on behalf of the Art of Eden, and Bro. Derrick the negativ-e for the Star of Newton. The debate, -which proved interesting, was -won 'by the Star of Newton, after which the question was put to the meeting, and resalted in. a vote in favour of the question.
