UNION STEAM SHARES.
SHARP RISE IN PRICE. " INQUIRIES KftOM LOXDOIJ. It will be remembered that a few weeks ago there was a sharp rise in Union Steam shares, and rumours were rife that the demand was the outcome of an amalgamation in London. Prices subsequently dropped to 4s/-, but this morning another rise took place, a≤ the result of cable orders from London. The , first-sale* were made at 51/-. but before) the close of the call 54,- was paid aid there were buyers left at 53•'-, but no seller quoted. Inquiry was made at the Union Company's local office this morning to ascertain if any news had been received from London. The an-wr rr.-eived was that the ri«e which took place a few weeks ago was absolutely without jus-tifirati-oii a* far .as any amalgamation was concerned, it having been ascertained that the Union was nAt at that time latins with any other company. As to the advance in price today, the office had r.o information regarding the probable cause of th? sudden demand.
