Mr. J. R. Reed proceeded to Welling- ! ton by the Main Trunk train last night.. The Rev, Schnieder was a passenger from the. Islands by. the. Atua to-day. Messrs J. Kirker and P. W. Endean„of this city,"_re leaving by the Maheno on a visit to Australia on Monday. Mr. A- Millar, Consul at Auckland for the. Netherlands, returned from a visit to the Islands by the Atua this morning. Mr. W. F. Massey, M.P., Leader of the Oppoaition, will leave for the Tsranaki district next Tuesday to attend several political functions. The Hon. Mr Menzies and Mr C. Samp- ' son, M.P., members of the Victorian Parliament, who have been spending a holiday in New Zealand, are returning to Australia by the Maheno on Monday. Mr and Mrs J. Donald, and Mr and Mrs Porter, of this city, are leaving by the Maheno on Monday to catch the Orient steamer at Sydney on a trip to England. The Princess Salote, daughter of the King of Tonga, returned io Auckland by the Atua to continue her studies. PrioT to leaving, a largely attended gathering was held in the Victoria Memorial Hall, Nukualofa, in honour of the princess. The Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, was among tbe passengers who intended to go South by the Victoria, hot who were left behind at Gisborne. when the steamer passed on Wednesday without calling. The Hon. A. T. Ngata wa» on Wednesday at Tokomaru Bay Waiting for the Victoria. He was Unable to attend tbe caucus of the Liberal party in Wellington as the stealaer waa unable to call there. Tbe death it announced of Sirs- Join Parker, who passed away at Matawhero (East Coast) at the age of 83. She was the first white woman to drive a horse and cart into Gisborne, no mean achievement in those far back days, when reads and bridges there ware none. Mr. James L. Kirker, son of the late genera] manager of the South British Insurance Company, leaves Auckland en Monday next to take up a position in the company's office at Brisbane. Mr. Kirker was for sevoral years In the Calcutta branch, and has an extensive knowledge of the underwriting business in all its departments. He has for the l_St year or two been employed in secretariat work at the head office. He is personally very popular with his fellow officers, and has received many hearty eoa_ratulatiaas and tokens of goodwill upon his promotion. The chairman of the WeUmgton City libraries Committee (Couacflkir Hindmarsh, MJ?.), Comtaillors Atkinson, Trevor, and Professor Yon Zedlitz have been appointed to represent the Wellington Council at the conference of the Libraries Association of New Zealand to fee held in Wellington during Raster- A civic reception is to be tendered to the visiting delegates. The use of the Council chamber has been granted to the association for their conference.
