— ■» ■ ■'■■ » COUNCIL TAKES WORK OVBB, The. construction of the New Northroad at Morningside has been taken over from the contractor by the Mt. Albert Borough Council, and will be finished by day labour. The Mayor (Mr Goyle) and the foreman of works {Mr Hope) met the men at midday to-day and explained. the situation to them, intimating tbat the Council would pay them at the minimum wage of 8/8 per day. The Mayor stated that the foreman would have power in tho case of really good men to pay 9/ a day, and would also be authorised to engage what men he thought suitable and diapause with the services of those who were unfitted for the work. The Mayor atao stated that the Council had decided to construct Kingtdand-road (tenders for which were called recently) by day labour. Realising that a lot of time had been lost by the men recently on account of wet weather, it had been agreed tbat when the rain made the etay at Marningside unworkable the men would be put on to work at Kingsland - road, as the ground there was of volcanic formation and was not much affected hy the wet. The Mayor expressed the hope that, in the exceptional circumstances, the men wonld do all they could to help the Council. .
