MAINTENANCE CASES.

SMOKING THE ONLY OOMFOBT. Martin Henry Ry*n appeared before Mr. C. C Kettle, at the S-M Conrt, to show cause why an order should not be made for him to support hi* wife and children. Mr. Singer appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Hall Skelton for the respondent. The husband stated he worked 16 miles from Auckland, *nd sent his wife what money he could. In answer to Mr. Kettle he "said he spent 3/ per week on tobacco. Mr. Kettle: Do you drink? Mr. Hall Skelton: Ee is in a dry district. Mr. Kettle: S-ome of them are we-t, in places. Mr. Singer: Theoretically dry. Witness: If you had to come ovet the. track I did yesterday, you would not even think it theoretically dry. Mr. Kettle: Twelve shillings a month is too much for tobacco. Witness: I could not go without my tobacco. It's the only comfort I havu in the bush. Mr. Kettle: I am a smoker myself, but 12/ a month is excessive. Witness: 1 will never try to give up smoking. It'* all I've got now. My wife refuses to come and live with me. Mr. Hall Skelton said his client was willinz to contribute 25/ per week, but did not want an order made. Mr. Singer said he would prefer as order. Mrs. Rran. in answer to Mr. Hall Skelton, said she had refused to go and livp with her husband in a shanty in the eountrv. Mr Kettle asked witless if he would swear off drink. Chailes Colin Wright appeared to answpr an application by his wife for separation Mr. Prenderpast appeared for the wife. Mrs. Wrizht deposed she had be<>n marri'd made an order for separation. Mr. Preaderpan sue 1 they did not ask for maintenance. MUSTARD TREATMENT. Ernest Maya 11 did not appear to answer an application by his wife for separation and maintenance. Mrs. Mayall related a sad story of her husband's inebriate habits, including even the assertion that he had rubbed mustard in her face, also thrown a glass of beer over her when she refused to drink it. The order was granted for separation, and to contribute 25/ per week.
