THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.

AUCKLAND THE PORT OF ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE. Seen by a "Star" representative this morning concerning the report that passengers desiring to book passages from Auckland to Vancouver wens unable to do so, because the mail boats were full before they left Sydney, Mr- W. A. Bed doe (Canadian Trade Commissioner) said the matter had been brought under his notice officially by those who found a difficulty in obtaining the accommodation they desired, but his reply had been that the subject was one on which they must communicate with the New Zealand authorities. As the question affected the rights of the New Zealand people, it came within the province of the New Zealand Government, and not the Cans dian Government, to find a remedy. Had a similar difficulty arisen at the Vancouver end of the line, then it would have been competent for the Canadian Government to move in the matter. Asked did the contract with the Union Company not make this an essentially' New Zealand-Canadian service. Mr. Beddoe said the contract provided for a regular steamship service between the J city of Vancouver, British Columbia, 1 and Auckland. New Zealand, calling at, Victoria. Honolulu, and Suva. The con- j tract provides that, if required by t»e Minister, each voyage may be extended' to Australia, in view of the contemn]at-' ed inclusion of Australia in the contract. The service at the moment is a Cans-! dim-New Zealand service. That the! steamers go on to Sydney is purely aj subsidiary arrangement. " The existing contract made Auckland the port of de-i paxture, and Vancouver the port oil arrival, and vice versa.
