MAORI CHIEFS DEATH.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) HUNTLY, Friday. The death took place on Thursday evening of Whero Whera Tawhiao, eldest brother of "King" Mahuta, at Waahi, Huntly, the Mahuta settlement. The deceased rangitira had been in bad health for some considerable time. A little over a week -ago a large company of natives escorted the invalid to Waingaro Springs, with the hope that the waters there would be of benefit to him. vFTe was brought back to Waahi on Wednesday, and passed away the following day. A large tangi is being held and preparations are being made for a large number of mourners who are expected to arrive from all parts on Saturday and Monday, over 100 telegrams having been sent to the different chiefs and hapus informing them of the death of the wellknown chief.
