WAIHI SHARES.
DROP IN PRICES. As suggested in the paragraph in last evening's issue the smart rise of Waihi shares was too rapid to expect that it could all be maintained. When the market opened this morning, it was evident tliat the demand had ceased for the present, and the opening sale was at 70/, whereas 76/ C was the highest figure touc-hed yesterday. Later transactions were at C 9/, and the last sale at noon was at G9/9. Although there has been no official information regarding developments in the mine for the last few feet of driving in the Empire lode at the No. 10 level, yet there are persistent rumours that the cause of the decline was, that after the last IS foet liad been penetrated in ore that assayed from £3 7/6 to £3 .')/ per ton. throe feet of calc.ite was penetrated. This, of course, would naturally create an uneasy feeling Tout later rumours state that only tliree feet of the calcite existed, and that the face is again in kindly looking quartz.
