Bates' weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. this day: "Moderate to strong northerly winds veering; expect unsettled and cloudy weather; rain probable; glass little movement." What might have proved to te a serious fire occurred yesterday afternoon in a workshop belonging to Mr. Smith on the Great North-road, and although it was speedily extinguished by the City Brigade the flames had spread to the Tivoli Theatre which adjoins, and a little damage was done to both buildings. Mr. J. B. Coatcs, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, who was in Sydney on the 17th inst., on his way to Brisbane informed an interviewer that there was no depression in New Zealand, and the Dominion was in as sound and healthy a condition as it ever had been. The number of arrivals over departures in New South Wales was generally to be expected at this time of the year when shearers and freezing works employees came from New Zealand in order to get in the season. These figures would show in the opposite direction later in thp year. Apart from the drop in wool, which had affected the values of exports in Ne.w Zealand and Australia alike, the Dominion was as prosperous as ever. A number of New Zealand landowners had taken up large areas of sheep country in Queensland, whilst others had bought and sold again at a substantial profit. Mr. Arnold Williams, one of the largest landowners in the North Island, was much struck with the possibilities of the northern province, and had, within the last few weeks, taken up a big extent of country, and Mr. Acton Adams, a big run-holder in Otago, was accompanying him (Mr. Coates) to Brisbane on a similar mission. Othe* - station-owners in New Zealand were looking to Queensland for properties, and a number had already secured holdings there. Mr. Coates said that he preferred not to deal with any questions affecting thp financial business of the Commonwealth or of New Zealand. He was making the present trip solely for the benefit of Ids health. A meeting was held at the Mission Hall last evening, when the annual report in connection with the benevolent work of the mission wu presented. Mr. .las. Buttle presided, and Mr. H. E. Pacey gave a statement of finance for the year as follows: —Boots and clothing. £8 0/fi: food, £SO 4/9; rent and lodging. £25 10/8; sickness, medicine, etc.. £37 3/6; fuel, £ll 9/4; funeral expenses. £5; Christmas, children, £8 15/3; salaries. £7B; sundries, £1 16/6-, total. £226 0/0. Sister Kenneth gave a statement oV the work carried out during the past fifteen years amongst the poor and needy of the city, and explained that every case was fully investigated before relief was administered. During 1911 the value of products of New South Wales manufactories and work? was 17.058.268. an increase of 16 per cent on the previous year. In ten years the number of factories has increased by 44 per cent, the persons employed by 51 per cent, the output of the factories 94 per cent, and the amount of salaries and wages 76 per cent.

Dr. McDowell, a member of the University College Council, lecturing before the Auckland Accountants' Students' Society last night, declared himself strongly in favour of the Metropolitan ground as a site for the new University. Three-fourths of the students, he said, who now attended the lectures at the College were tfiose whose only opportunity for so doing was after 5 o'clock in the evening, and they should not be hampered or handicapped. It had been said that an alternative site at Mount Eden could be reached in ten minutes. Apart from the fifteen acres already allocated to the Grammar School, he did not know of any site at Mount Eden that would be reached in less than twenty minutes after leaving the car in Khyber Pass-road. If the College was placed tfiere it would bar many from enjoying its privileges. He hoped tboy would be successful in retaining the site chosen by the Government. The statement was recently published that a deputation was to wait on Dr. McDowell, and ask him to accept nomination as a candidate for City West. Dr. McDowell, seen this morning by a "Star" representative, stated that at the present time he had no intention of entering the political arena. Some tobacco is made in Australia — the "Royal Standard" is made right on the plantations in Virginia—with the pick of the crop at the disposal of the makers. — (Ad.) Entries for the Manawatu Golf Championship are coming to hand, among them being the New Zealand amateur champion, Arthur Duncan. Wives of great men oft remind them They can make their lives sublime, Smoking pure tobacco only—"Royal Standard" all the time!--(At)
