LOST FROM A LAUNCH.
MANITKAU SETTLER DROWNED. A drowning fatality occurred in the Manukau Harbour yesterday, the victim being a man named Ralph Leonard Wakefield, aged between 35 and 40 years. He was returning from Onehunga to Huia in a launch, and about 4 p.m. was seen by several persons on the Huia wharf to go to the bow of t. K e boat, the engine of which was still running. Suddenly he slipped overboard, and was heard to call out for someone to come quickly. A dinghy was got out immediately, but before it could reach him the man, who was swimming about, sank, and did not afterwards rise. Meanwhile the launch ran on and soon ran ashore. A number of boats then put out, and searched for the body for some three hours, but no sign of it could be found. The deceased was a native of England, and had no relatives in New Zealand. He was a settler, in partnership with Mr. Robert Gordon. This morning a constable was dispatched in a launch with the object of dragging the harbour around the scene of the accident.
