STANDING IN THE STREET.

EIGHT HAWKERS FINED. At the Police Court this morning, before Mr Cutten, S.M., eight street hawkers were charged that they had remained stationary with their barrows in Queen-street for a longer time than was reasonable to transact business. The accused were Richard C. Nicholls, Ernest Roper, Henry Barris, Edward J. Chitham, Henry Flood, Albert Waterhouse, Robert Marshall and Chas. Abrahams. Chithain, Waterhouse, and Abrahams pleaded not guilty, and Inspector Tester gave evidence that on 4th August (Friday) he saw Chitham stand opposite Cook's Agency for eleven minutes to serve three customers. Waterhouse stood for six minutes outside Victoria Arcade, and Abrahams for five minutes outside the Arcade. Chitham: Is it a fa-ct you were hiding in the doorway of a tobacconist's shop, trying to catch ns? Witness: It is not. I was talking to a man inside- the shop. His Worship: There as nothing improper about that, and it doesn't affect the question at all. Chitham said that he had nothing to spy, while both Waterhouse and Abrahams said that they did not know whether they were standing or not, because they knew nothing of the matter till they got their summonses eight days later. His Worship, in inflicting a fine of 10/ apiece all round, warned the accused that if they did not comply with the by-laws they would probably have their right to work on the street taken away from them altogether. One of the Accused: What i 3 the alternative? Hie Worship: Forty-eight hours. Accused: 111 do it. I can't earn 10/ in that time. Waterhouse asked for time in which to pay, and three days ■was allowed ea-ch of the accused.
