HER DEFENCE SYSTEM. (Received 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, April 4. Baron Denman, the new GovernorGeneral of the Commonwealth, Sir John Fuller, Sir Geo. H. Reid, Sir Edward Hutton, Sir Francis Hopwood, and Sir E. W. Shaekleton were present when Captain Collins read a paper which dealt with Australian development.

Lord Denman expressed his pleasure at going to Australia. He was conscious of disadvantages in following his experienced predecessors, but he relied on the proverbial cordiality of Australians.

General Hutton, in moving a vote of thanks to Captain Collins, said Australia had reason to be proud of her military past. She really pioneered the co-opera-tive system of Empire defence. He eulogised compulsory, service.
