Captain Sinker, of the Missios schooner, Southern Cross, returned by the Maheno yesterday from a visit i« Australia.

Mr. and Mrs. F. Harris, visitors from London, arrived by the Maheno. last evening, and are at present staying at the Grand Hotel.

Mr. C. M. Berkeley has arrived in town to make arrangements for the opening of Williamson's new Opera Company at the end of the month.

Mr. Hugo Gorlitz arrive! in Auckland by the North Express yesterday to assist Messrs. Macmahon in the production of their new series of Wild West pictures.

Baron and Baroness de Bebhune, visitors from Belgium, arrived by tarn Maheno yesterday, and are staying at the Grand Hotel for a few days priot to a tour of the Dominion.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Brockelmann. visitor* from Hamhurg, Germany, arrived by tht Maheno last evening, and will stay at the Grand Hotel for a week or two before proceeding on a tour of New Zealand.

Among arrivals by the Sydney boat yesterday, who are staying at the Central Hotel, are Mr. and Mrs. Davy, of Sydney, and Messrs. C. H. Woodcock, of Melbourne, and Mortimer Boult, of Sydney. Mrs. Harris, sen., of Oomib West, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon. The deceased was an old and highly respected, identity of the district. She leaves a husband and grown-up family to mourn their loss.

Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Clark, visitors from England, arrived by the Maheno from Sydney yesterday, and after a stay in Auckland of about a week, will go on to Rotorua. They are stopping at the Central Hotel.

Miss Nellie Stewart, the well-known actress, arrived from the South by tho Monowaf yesterday, accompanied by her husband, Mr. G. Musgrove, nnd daughter, and left by this morning's express for Rotorua.

Miss Harriet Starkiss, headmistress of the Normal School, died yesterday. She had been over 20 years in the service of the North Canterbury Education Board (reports a Christchurch Press Association telegram). ■ .-- •. . '.".

Sergeant Mackenzie, of Gore, died yesterday morning, aged 60 years. The, deceased had been in the police force for 35 years, and prior to arriving in New. Zealand was a member of the Inverness constabulary.

Mr. W. J. Adams, of Sydney, who is a periodic 'visitor to New Zealand for the fishing, arrived by the Maheno last,night, accompanied by Mrs. Adams, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. To-morrow Mr. and Mrs. Adams will leave for Taupo.

Mr. E. W. Shanahan, M.A., who recently from the position oi master of English at the Auckland Technical School, in order to proceed Home and prosecute further studies, leaves by the Maheno to-night en routa for London.

Lady Islington will arrive by the Main Trunk express to-morrow morning from Wellington, on a brief -visit in connection with {he refurnishing arrangements at Government House, and •will stay at the Grand Hotel during her two or three days' sojourn.

Among the arrivals by the Maheno yesterday was Dr. G. P. Clark, ex-ILP, for Caithness in the Honse of Commons. 'He is accompanied by Mrs. "dark, and ■has come under medical advice to take the 'baths at Rotorua, whither .ho proceeds in a day or -two.

Mr. James Slator, architect, a wellknown Auckland resident, who went to visit his native land (the United States) last April, after an absence of 40 years, returned yesterday by the -Monowai, via, Wellington. Mt. Slator looks wonderfully well, notwithstanding he » now 77 years of age.

' His Excellency the Governor arrived at Mataura from Invereargill this morning. He visited the paper mills, and went into Gore, where he was driven to spots 61 interest in the town, afterwards being entertained at lunch by the Borough Council.—Press Association' telegram.

Mr. J. Hodge, British M.P., this morning, on behalf of a number of friends of Mr. T. Came (secretary of the certificated; Engine Drivers' Union) presented' that gentleman with a handsome marble clock U6 a token of esteem, and also well wishes. The occasion that prompted the presentation was the marriage of Mr. Came last week.

Among the visitors to Auckland at present is Mr. J. Hodge, imemher in the House of Commons for the Gorton Division of Lancashire, who has come out to the antipodes in search of health and strength. Neuritis and sleeplessness •have succumbed to the genial climate of the Commonwealth and the Dominion, but even Rotorua could not eradicate his rheumatism of some years' standing. After nearly two months ia Australia, Mr. Hodge caime across to Wellington and then on to Rotorua. From Auckland, he goes South again, and will deliver addresses in tne maia centres.

Mr. R. Hollis, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and secretary of the New South Wales Enginedrivers and Firemen and Cleaners' Association, arrived 'by the Malieno yesterday, with the object of helping the New Zealand __ginedrivers and Firemen and Cleaners' Association to get on a sounder basis. Last,evening he addressed the local members of the Association in the Auckland engine shed, and tomorrow, accompanied hy Mr. D. Brown, president of the New Zealand Association, he will leave for Frankton, whence he will proceed South, and return to> Auckland in about a month's time.
