THE CASPIAN GALE.
HUNDREDS DROWNED. HARROWING DETAILS. LONDON, December 9. Terrible details have been received from Astrakhan (on the Volga, about 40 miles from its mouth in the Caspian Sea) of the damage by tlie gale there last week. Many barges with tugs towing them were driven down the Volga towards the Caspian Sea, and dashed into each other and into the icefloes, and soon became mere wrecks, to which hundreds of fishermen clung until they were overcome by the cold. Two ice-breakers and three steamers' crews, showing splendid courage, and working in the darkness, rescued over 1000 people. The steamers continued to battle amidst masses of ice in the Volga estuary until access to the imprisoned barges became impossible, and one-third of the fishermen perished. The fishing industry has been ruined, depots, boats, and nets having been destroyed. Thousands of horses and cattle perished in the accompanying floods, and hundreds of dwellings were swept away, the occupants being rescued from the roofs and from tree tops, where they sougiit refuge.
