KAISER ON THE NEW THOUGHT COMBATTED BY RELIGION. BERLIN, November 17. The Kaiser, in a speech at the Benedictine Monastery at Beuren, declared that the twentieth century had brought ideas which could only be effectively combatted by the help of religion. His Majesty added, "The crown I wear can only give mc an assurance of success if based on the word and personality of Christ, and is a symbol thereof." Having given a crucifix to the monastery, the Kaiser said: "You must help to strengthen the religious sense inborn in the Germans, and increase their reveres—s towards the altar and the throne.
