' Control of Roads. —The Town Clerk, < Auckland, forwarded formal Intimation or ! the itttention of the City Council to apply : to the Governor for an. The Mayor said the City Council had imt discovered it ; had not the power of control it thought it i had in respect to those roada. Mr Garland 1 moved that the matter foe referred to the ' Borough solicitor to oppose the control be- ' ing granted until the Richmond-road contract had been completed. That was agreed to. ; Close Building.—Daniel Patterson ap- ' plied lor a permit to erect six cottages upon a section 153 by 129, at Richmond. A subsequent offer was made to redoce the number of cottages from six to five. Mr Garland said that would be 3907 feet per • cottage, -whereas the new by-law toed the area per cottage at over 4000 superficial feet- The Mayor said the Council as . Board of Health could object to buildings being overcrowded. Mr Baildon said it would be better to tell the applicant straight away that more than four cottages could not be allowed on such an area of land. Applicant was desired to submit a fresh pian. Water Supply.—The Mayor brought np the matter of the water account of the Council, and asked nhat it be referred to the Waterworks Committee to report as to the advisability of granting a nose license. He said unless something was done the Council would have a big jump in the water account, now that ithe summer ■was setting in. The inspector in a recent tour of -the Borough found no less than 70 hoses which were only used as playthings for the children, and not for watering gardens. The matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee. MT EDEN. A special meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council was held last evening, to consider tenders for work in Grange-road. Mount Eden. There were present: Messrs 0. Nicholson (Mayor), S. Barns, E. Yates, W. Woolley, N. Seabrook, E. Potter, and J. Hooton. Only two tenders -were received, frcm Mr G. Knight, at £930 18/8, and Mr H. S. Wilson, at £877 17/6. The Council considered the tenders too high, the engineer's estimate having been £725, and it was decided to do the work by day labour. PARNEIX. The fortnightly meeting of the Parnell Borongh Council -was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr R. S. Briggs), ] and Messrs R. E. Isaacs, C. E. Palmer, J. Brown, G. Scarboro', W. Johns, T. Long, and W. Thomas. ] Mechanics' Bay.—The Town Clerk of Auckland wrote stating that the City Conn- j cil was petitioning the Governor to have a ■ triangular piece of reclaimed land in Mechanics' Bay, adjacent to Parnell Borough, added to the city. The matter '< was left in the hands of the Mayor. Boundaries.—On the motion of the Streets Committee, it was decided to make an appointment for a conference re the boundary . line between the two districts. I Fire Brigade.—Mr M. Paykel wrote ex- \, plaining and amplifying a former letter I condemning .the methods of fire fighting •followed in the Borongh. He explained that he did not wish to cast the slightest aspersion on the members of the brigade, but on the system under "which, they were required to work. G. Coldicutt be informed that, in view of the expense already incurred in Arthur-street, the Council cannot assist him to erect fence on his property. Resolved that six wire baskets be erected at intervals in Queen-street to nola orange and banana skins etc Industrial Exhibition.—lt was decided to extend the patronage of the Council to Cooper's Industrial Exhibition, to be held in the new hall now being erected, but that any action in the matter b e left with the Chamber of Commerce. Correspondence.—The Town Clerk read the copy of a letter sent to tie Minister of Public Works introducing Mr J. E Taylor, and. asking the Minister whether he would approve of an embankment across the Menuksu as per plans to be submitted, and also whether be would appoint an engineer to superintend the work if approved. A letter was received from the secretary of the Onehunga Cycle Touring Club, asking permission to use the recreation ground for a sports meeting on December 17th, and to make a charge for admission.—Agreed to. A letter was received from Mr J. Gtanfleld and others complaining that the street was not watered in front of their shops. It was derided to inform them that no charge ■would be made for them using their- own hoses on the street. A letter was received from Mr W. J. Brewin, offering the Council a section in the upper part of Queen-street for a library. In exchange for the site on which the Salvation Army barracks stand. The town clerk was instructed to inform Mx Brewin that the library site was already fixed upon.
