SLAUGHTER OF BIRDS.

AT FASHION'S WHIM PROHIBITING THE SALE. LONDON, July 20. A bill, introduced by Mr. Percy Alden (Liverpool member for the Tottenham division of Middlesex), prohibiting the I sale of the plumage and skins of certain wild birds, has been read a first time in the House of Commons. Its aim is to prevent the extinction of rare birds. Mr. Alden mentioned that 1000 emu skins, all smuggled out of Australia, had been catalogued at last year's sale in London, likewise the skins of 25,000 humming birds. Colonel Carlile declared that the only remedy was an international agreement, otherwise the prohibition would divert the trade to the Continent.
