THE MOKOHINAU LIGHT.
(To the Editor.) ■Sir, —Those persons in authority who, in. their wisdom, pia«ed the above light in its present position would be surprised to hear in. this era of advancement that an attempt -was made to remove it on J the recommendation of a handful ot ill- | advisers. This sentinel of safety has been a blessing in the past, and is still silently doing dts duty, and it is ptea-s----i ing to see such a host of seafaring men i rise with indignation at the suggestion •oi its removal. Whangarei Heads requires a light for oar numerous coasting vessels; one of the calibre of the Rangitoto beacon light would suffice, with its insignificant upkeep. Jt has been virtually promised to the Harbour Board I and the people of Whangarei. Surely the J enormous and ever-increasing light dues j paid by shipping to our port will etand ! a light there; but cot at the expense of i Mokohinau. Let the Minister of Marine j provide ■a light at Whangarei, and later jon at the North Cape, and he -will rei ceive the goodwill of all those who go j down to the sea in ships, and minimise j the reproach of our Australian neighbours, who maintain that out coastline 'i 3 strewn, with the bones of lAustraliani owned vessels. —I am, etc, C.C.D.
