GOVERNMENT HOUSE PETITION,

(To the Editor.) ! Sir, —I trust that every workingman ■ in this city will sign the petition in i favour of retaining Government House, i If we let this site go now, it is gone for i ever, and other public reserves are sure • to follow. If we retain it for its present; purpose it may be possible to have the j grounds in the future for a public park! and the house for entertaining visitors ■ to this city. I mean men who by "merit" I and the good they have done in the | world have proved themselves worthy of j being entertained by a democratic com-j munfty. 1 have no time for a "snobbery" class, who have no better qualifications! than mere riches, and can honestly vote j for entertaining our present Governor;! he having a good record fox being a progressive man. When tbe place is not occupied by the Governor, the grounds should be open to the people. I am told that the gates have lately been closed, and the people (the real owners) debarred. from entering a public domain, which 1 consider a wrong thing. Other more suitable sites could be bought for University purposes. —I am, etc., A. SANFORD.
