DOMESTIC SERVANTS.
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. •A large deputation of members of Parliament, medical men, and ladies waited on the Premier to-day to urge that the Government should assist in bringing something approaching an adequate supply of domestic servants to New Zealand. The deputation repre- ! sented the position as a serious oue. One j suggestion was that Scandinavian girls I should be brought out. Another speaker I urged that only girls who had passed ' medical inspection should 1 be imported, while another thought the Government ' I should do something to raise the, status ;of domestic servants. j j.ac Premier, in reply, said the Government had decided £hat there should be I a reduction of two jounds in the passage of girls to this-"couritryl That was j made in accordance with a promise given jin Christcliurph. He ha.d; ajso suggested that the shipping companies should make similar-reductions. The Govern- . : ment wonld endeavour -to do. its best to 'relieve the situation... Some of the causes of the "trouble were world-wide. The • suggestion that there should be a com- ' mittee of advice would have to be very ~ carefully inquired into. The Government ,' w"ould do everything to legitimately • assist the mothers of New Zealand.
