CRICKET IN ENGLAND.
FLAYERS AND GENTLEMEN. LONDON, July 12. In the second match between Gentlemen and Players the former were disposed of in the first innings for 114, of which Le Couteur, the Victorian, scored 22 (not out). Smith took five wickets for 18 runs. • The Players replied with 209, Le Couteur capturing four wickets for '56The Gentlemen's second innings closed "for 95,' Hirst taking four for 18. The Players won by 10 wickets, only one run- being required in their second innings. Speaking at a gathering of cricketers last evening,* Lord Harris said that he earnestly hoped that every effort would be made to realise the proposal to bold •"triangular test-matches. Many longed to see the result of the tour of a South African team in Australia, where the Africans' peculiar bowling would be tested on very fast wickets.
