In Victoria Labour captured the Batman seat from the Liberals, J. O. Aron being beaten by H. E. Beard. The Corangamite seat is also practically certain for Labour, J. H. Scullen leading Dr. G. Wilson, the sitting member. Mr. Tudor (Labour), Agar Wynne, G. Fairbairn (Liberals) have been re-elected.
PERTH, this day.
Mr. Hopkins (member of the Assembly for Beverley) has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment on a charge of forging and uttering a promissory note for £542.
SYDNEY, April 13.
The State by-election for Darling Harbour to replace Mr. John Norton, who is a candidate for the Federal Senate, has resulted in the return of Mr. Cochrane, secretary of the Labour Council, by an overwhelming majority. Bowie, one of the Otway's quarantined passengievs, while fishing, was swept from the rocks and drowned. A companion had a narrow escape. HOBAK.T, April 13. The Athenic arrived from London today, and proceeds to Wellington in the morning, with 250 passengers.
