RACING NEWS.

OTAHTJHU TROTTING d-08. The opening day's racing in connection with the Otahuhu Trotting Clnb'/i snro-ner meeting took place at Epsom on Sa-urcray last. The weather was fine, with the exception ot one light shower, and there -was a large attendance. The racing was more than usually interesting, several of the events being won by the narrowest of margins. Mr R. Absolom officiated as judge, Messrs F. Macmancmi- and J. B. Williamson as timekeepers, and Mr C. O'Connor as staxter. The ga_hering was admirably conducted by the various officials, under the secretary (Mr F. D. Yonge), everything passing off without a hitch. THE TOTALISATORS. Speculation was not quite up to last year, the staff of Messrs W. Blom-field and Co. handling the sum of £3265 10/, a decrease of £C 99 on last year. At the dlstange leggy Pryde still had charge, but a little' further ou Julian brought Cyrona along on the outside with a desperate run. and fairly outriding Brown, snatched n victory by a short head. Conqueror, Waltekaurl, Tableau, and Kit-ikiriroa. When they reached the stand, Kirlklrlroa and Cavalier wcie togpt— er in the lead, and then followed Tableau, Floranz, Lady Love. Sweet Patch. Cavalier went to the front going round the back, and passing the stand the second time had half a dozen lengths' advantage ol Floranz, after which came Sweet Patch and Lad; Love. Sweet I'atch ran up in to second position as they went through the dip, and was within a couple of lengths of the leader when they turned for home. In the run to the post Sweet Patch tired badly, and Cavalier drawing out again, wou a good lace by four lengths. Floranz was ten leugths further back third, with Kiriklriroa fourth. Time 5.5 2-5. Sweet Patch was favourite. SYLVIA PARK TROT HANDICAP of 50 soys. Distance one mile and a half. Frank Quinn's gr g Maik Scott, aged, 12s (Scott) 1 G. Braiu's b h Good Friday, aged, 7s (May) 2 W. With half the jouruey covered, Mark Scott was in the lead, followed by Good Friday nnd Bell Briar. Going along the back Good Friday moved up closer to the leader, which, however, was never seriously troubled, winning at the finish by thieo lengths; Black Diamond was 100 yards away third. In the tun to the post Barter came very fast, and gradnally overhauling the louder, won an interesting race by two lengths; Phyllistlna was 12 lengths away third, with Autocrat fourth. Time 2.31 1-5. Rosie Wilkes had charge when the stand was reached, her nearest attendants being Madam Melba, Tahoa, and Grampian, llosie Wilkes was first to turn for home, just clear of Grampian, after which came Taihoa and Madam Melba. In the run lo the post Grampian challenged, and a great race was witnessed, Rosie Wilkes lasting long enough to win by a head- Taihoa was half-a-dozen lengths away third, and Madam Melba was fourth.
