(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DETERMINED SUICIDE. DUNEDIN, this day. Thomas Shore, a guard on the Taritu coal railway, committed suicide yesterday by placing the muzzle of a gun in his mouth and discharging it. He was a son of the mine manager. SUSPICIOUS FIRES. HOKITIKA, this day. An outbreak of fire occurred at four o'clock this morning in an unoccupied cottage owned by Mrs. Murphy, in Staffordstreet. Two rooms were gutted. Incendiarism is suspected. The building is insured for £100, and furniture stored for £25 in the United. On Sunday morning an attempt was made to burn Hungerford's bridge at the upper crossing, but only a little damage was done. SINGULAR FATALITY. WELLINGTON, Sunday. A man named James Simpson was found dead in a stable in Grant-road, at three o'clock this morning. An inquest was held this afternoon, when a verdict was returned that death was due to rupture of a varicose vein in the leg. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The total expenditure on the Christchurch Roman Catholic Cathedral to date has been £65,000. Ohristchurch raised £20,500, parishes outside the city £15,----000, clergy of the diocese £1055, foreign contributors £4800, and since the Cathedral was opened subscriptions have reduced the liability to £13,000. In the annual bowling match between Christchurch and Dunedin centres, the local players won every rink but one, scoring in the aggregate 196 to Dunedin's 138.
