NGAURUHOE IN ERUPTION.

TXjAXBS XICHT COTOCERY FOR MILES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, this day. An Ohakune traveller reports that a bigexuption-of "Ngauruhoe occurred a-bout seven o'clock last night. The flare from the mountain lit up the country foi miles around. A heavy report accompanied the shot. "J-QEE ACTIVE THAN USUAL.'' Mr. W. J. Napier arrived in Auckland this -morning .from Wellington by the "Main Trunk express. Asked by a "StaT" representative did he .observe anything unusual while running round the base of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, en :route to Auckland, Mr. Napier ireplied that althoijgh Ngaumhoe was m;:-.'h more active than usual, he failed to see anything ■in the .nature of a violent eruption. The express arrived at Waiouru at about 8 o'clock, and the night was beautifully ■bright and clear, so that the noxthera■bound travellers had a splendid 'view of the mountain. Great clouds of smoke were belching forth from the crater, but there was no flame, and they "heard no explosions. The volcano, in fact, did not appear to be more active last night than it was on Wednesday morning. Mr. Napier then had the opportunity of viewing the famous Ngaiiruhoe under the most favourable circumstances. The weather, though freezingly cold, was hright and clear. Great columns of smoke were emitted from the crater, and rolled away to the north-east. For ■25 years Mr. ."Napier has known 3-Igauru-i hoe, and he says that he never saw the ' volcano more active than it was on Wednesday morning. "Last night the t volume of smoke and steam was just as great, But evidently the upheaval I "referred to "by our correspondent had 1 worked" itself out by the time the -travellers on the Main Trunk express had iTeaoberl Waiouru.
