At a meeting of the Gisborne Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a resolution was passed, that a petition be presented to Parliament urging the abolition of enclosed coursing, as conducive to acts of cruelty and having evil effects, and that other centres throughout the Dominion be asked to co-oper-ate in the movement. The district manager of the Westport Coal Co. reports that the demand for coal is brisk, but the available tonnage is not at present adequate to supply the demand. This is credited to delay of boats at East Coast ports resulting from shortage of railway trucks. In consequence of this adverse condition, it is seriously contemplated to shorten hands at the mines. Opening debate of the sesaon of the Literary and Debating Society of the V.M.C.A. will be held ln the Lecture Hall at the Association Rooms on Saturday evening. The subject is "Capital Punishment."
